Sod Installation Guide

Soil Preparation
Kill weeds and grasses with
a recommended herbicide (follow directions); remove rocks and debris; add compost or Black Dirt to create a 2-inch base;
rototill to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. (Now is the time to install a Toro Sprinkler system.)
Grading
Work the soil, then level and smooth
with a rake. If soil seems loose, rolling may be done to firm soil before installing the sod. Final grade should be 1 inch
below walkways and driveways. Water soil lightly just before installing sod. Spread area with pre-plant fertilizer (consult
your nurseryman).
Sod Installation
Begin to install your sod immediately after the delivery. Spread
the sod, laying out your sod along a straight edge such as a walkway or driveway. Butt joints tightly together, do not
overlap. Stagger joints similar to rows of bricks. Use a sharp knife to cut and shape sod around curves, trees and borders,
etc.
Water is Critical
Start watering within 30
minutes, even if all the sod isn’t installed yet, to prevent wilting and drying. Never let the sod dry out and kill
the tender grass roots.
Roll Your New Sod
Rolling will smooth and level
your sod and press out air spaces below the sod.
Completely Water Your New Sod to a Depth of 6 to 8 inches
Keep your new lawn moist, but not soggy, during the first seven to ten days after installation. Lifting up
the sod to see if the dirt is wet is a good indication that your doing a great job. Early morning waterings are the best.
